Why Your Sewing Pattern Doesn't Fit

Why Your Sewing Pattern Doesn't Fit

Let me guess...

You downloaded a sewing pattern, checked the size chart for your favorite clothing brand, picked the same size, printed everything, cut your fabric, and spent hours sewing.

Then you tried it on...

Too tight.

Too loose.

Too long.

Too short.

And your first thought was probably:

"This pattern must be wrong."

Here's the little secret that almost every beginner discovers the hard way:

Most fitting problems don't come from the sewing pattern—they come from choosing the wrong size.

And trust me, you're definitely not alone.

Your Ready-to-Wear Size Doesn't Matter

This surprises almost everyone.

The size you wear when shopping isn't the size you should automatically choose in a sewing pattern.

Every clothing brand creates its own sizing system. You might wear a Medium in one store, a Large in another, and even a Small somewhere else.

Sewing patterns work differently.

Instead of using clothing labels, they are based on body measurements.

That's why your measuring tape is much more important than the size printed inside your favorite jeans.

Your Measurements Tell the Real Story

Before choosing your pattern size, take three basic measurements:

  • Bust
  • Waist
  • Hips

Now compare those numbers with the pattern's size chart.

Don't worry if your measurements fall into different sizes.

That's actually more common than you think.

Very few people fit perfectly into one single size.

What If You're Between Sizes?

This is one of the questions I hear most often.

Many beginners think they must choose only one size.

But that's not how sewing works.

You can blend between sizes to better match your body shape.

In fact, that's one of the biggest advantages of making your own clothes.

Instead of changing your body to fit the clothes...

You customize the clothes to fit your body.

And that's pretty amazing.

Don't Forget About Ease

Here's another detail many beginners overlook.

Two patterns can have exactly the same body measurements but fit completely differently.

Why?

Because of ease.

Some garments are designed to fit close to the body, while others are intentionally loose and relaxed.

Always read the pattern description before deciding which size to make.

It can save you from a lot of disappointment later.

My Favorite Advice

Forget the letter on the clothing tag.

A size is simply a guide—not a definition of your body.

As a fashion designer, one of the biggest improvements I ever made was learning to trust measurements instead of clothing sizes.

Once you understand how a sewing size chart works, choosing the right pattern size becomes much easier—and your finished garments will fit so much better.
