How to Know How Much Fabric to Buy
Share
Knowing how much fabric to buy is one of the biggest struggles when you start sewing. Many people either waste money buying too much or get stuck because they didn’t buy enough.
Here’s a simple, practical method you can use every time.
How much fabric for a blouse
The key is one measurement: the length.
Measure from your shoulder down to where you want the blouse to end.
For example, if the length is 60 cm:
- 60 cm (garment length)
-
- 10 cm extra for seams and margin
Result: you need about 70 cm of fabric.
If your blouse has long sleeves or extra volume, add 30–40 cm more.
How much fabric for pants
For pants, you also start with the length:
Measure from your waist down to your ankle.
For example, if it measures 100 cm:
- 100 cm (length)
-
- 20 cm extra
Result: you need about 1.20 meters of fabric.
If the pants are wide (like palazzo), you’ll need more fabric.
Rule that never fails
If you’re unsure, use this rule:
Buy double the length of your garment.
Examples:
- 60 cm blouse → buy 1.20 m
- 100 cm pants → buy 2 m
This way, you never run out of fabric.
Pro tip
Always add 10–20 cm extra.
It gives you room for mistakes and makes your sewing process smoother.
Learning how to calculate fabric properly saves you money and helps you sew like a professional from the start.
