What Is Seam Allowance?

How to Add Seam Allowance to a Sewing Pattern

When creating or using a sewing pattern, adding seam allowance is one of the most important steps. Seam allowance is the extra space between the stitching line and the edge of the fabric. Without it, your garment may turn out too small or difficult to sew correctly.

What Is Seam Allowance?

Seam allowance is the distance from the edge of the fabric to the sewing line. It gives you space to sew pieces together properly and helps the garment keep its shape.

Common seam allowance measurements include:

  • 0.5 cm for delicate garments

  • 1 cm for standard sewing

  • 1.5 cm for beginner-friendly patterns

  • 3 cm or more for hems

How to Add Seam Allowance

1. Start With the Original Pattern

Use your base pattern without seam allowance first. Make sure all lines and measurements are correct before adding extra space.

2. Choose Your Seam Allowance

Decide how much seam allowance you want to use. Most sewing patterns use 1 cm seam allowance.

3. Draw Around the Pattern

Using a ruler or pattern tool, draw a new line around the entire pattern piece at the chosen distance.

For example:

  • If using 1 cm seam allowance, draw 1 cm outside the original stitching line.

4. Mark Important Areas

Don’t forget to label:

  • Fold lines

  • Notches

  • Grainline

  • Hem allowance

  • Center front and center back

5. Cut Along the New Line

The outer line becomes your cutting line.

Why Seam Allowance Matters

Adding seam allowance correctly helps:

  • Improve garment fit

  • Make sewing easier

  • Prevent fabric from fraying too close to stitches

  • Allow adjustments during fitting

Final Tip

Always double-check your seam allowance before cutting fabric. A small mistake can change the fit of the entire garment.
