How Much Fabric to Buy for Skirts and Dresses
Share
Knowing how much fabric to buy for skirts and dresses can save you time, money, and frustration. The good news? You don’t need complicated formulas—just a simple method that works every time.
How much fabric for a skirt
The key is the length.
Measure from your waist down to where you want the skirt to end.
For example, if your skirt length is 70 cm:
- 70 cm (length)
- 10–20 cm extra for seams
Result: you need about 80–90 cm of fabric
If the skirt is:
- Tight (pencil skirt) → same calculation
- Wide or gathered → you may need double the fabric
How much fabric for a dress
For dresses, use the full length of your body measurement.
Measure from your shoulder down to your desired length.
For example, if your dress is 100 cm:
- 100 cm (length)
- 20 cm extra
Result: you need about 1.20 meters of fabric
Add more fabric if:
- The dress has sleeves → +30–50 cm
- The skirt part is wide → up to double fabric
Rule that never fails
If you’re unsure:
Buy double the length
Examples:
- Skirt (70 cm) → buy 1.40 m
- Dress (100 cm) → buy 2 m
This guarantees you won’t run out of fabric.
Pro tip
Always add extra fabric for:
- Mistakes
- Shrinkage
- Better finishing
This is what makes your work look professional.
